ince 1872 the Matthews Family has and still provides continuous service to the Northwest Tasmanian community, within the Jewellery Industry.
Five generations of family members have operated a number of jewellery stores throughout the North of Tasmania since that date.
Matthews Jewellers can proudly claim to be the oldest family jeweller in Australia, with the continuous operation within their family of their store in Rooke Street, Devonport, Tasmania where the tradition continues to this day.
The founder of the business John Godfrey Matthews arrived in Latrobe, Tasmania from County Kilkenny, Ireland in 1872 and, determined to make a success of his new life, the 19 year old Irish Migrant opened his Jewellery and Watchmaking business in Latrobe.
In 1919 John Godfrey sold the Latrobe business to his son Francis Joseph Matthews (known as Frank), when Frank returned from Europe after serving his country in World War I.
In 1934 Frank opened the Devonport Jewellery store in Rooke St., where it stands presently, and is the only store still operating.
Frank was followed by his son Brian, who then passed the business to his son Jeff, and Jeff's son Cameron.
With five generations of family members working in the Jewellery Industry and employing hundreds of people in its time, members of the Matthews family continue to this day to proudly provide services to the community in virtually all mainstream aspects of a Jewellery store.
The Matthews name is synonymous with the local community, whereby many family members over many years, have made significant contributions to the wellbeing and development of their wider local community in a number of different ways, including involvement in charitable and sporting organisations, as well as local government.
